Be adventures and take the forgotten routes to and around Mývatn with us.
We will take you for an exciting off road journey where we will follow some nearly forgotten and unused trails to and around the Mývatn area. During our trip you will get to experience rough Off-Roading, great mountain views, volcanoes and waterfalls. We will also take you to some more known attractions such as Mývatn, Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá and Hverir.
Our first stop will be at the magnificent waterfall Goðafoss, from there we will continue towards the central highlands where we take a little know back passage to lake Mývatn, Our first stop at lake Mývatn will be at Dimmuborgir (Dark castle) which is a unusually dark and rough lava field which contains many volcanic caves and strange lava formations such as “Gatklettur”. After a refreshing stop we will go for exiting "Off-road action" and make our way towards the volcanoes Hverfjall and Lúdent and we will explore the Lúdentsborgir crate row and take in some great panoramic view over the surrounding area. From here we will take a secret passage to Hverir following a long forgotten trail along the rough lava.
Hverir has countless hot mud pots, fumaroles and steam vents in widely different colors which marvels all which explore the area. From there we go over Námaskarð and to Grjótagjá the old nature baths at Mývan.
Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near lake Mývatn with a thermal spring inside which was used as a bathing place for centuries until the last eruptions at Mývatn when the water temperature rose to about 60°C. Last we will drive past the unique volcanic landforms Skútustaðagígar (pseudo crater).
Now we will head back towards Akureyri but there is still something to look forward to, we will make our way along the old road over Vaðlaheiði (if open), providing us with splendid panoramic views over Eyjaförður and the beautiful Akureyri.
This will be a trip to remember.
