IceAk W10 – THE FANTASTIC FALLS
Highlights: Aldeyjarfoss, Hrafnabjargafoss, Goðafoss &
the great Ice wall at Kaldakinn.
Come with us on a fantastic ice, water and Off-Road waterfall adventure.
On this tour we will take you for a journey to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Northern Iceland, if not all of Iceland. The first one being Goðafoss (Waterfall of the gods). Goðafoss is one of Iceland’s most roamed waterfalls both for its stunning beauty and for its remarkable history. The water from the glacial river Skjálfandafljót fall down from a height of 12 meter over a width of 30 meters. Along the canyon you can see magnificent basalt columns and potholes. The waterfall played a big role in the Icelandic history. According to the Sagas the waterfall got its name from when the Law-speaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði Þorkelsson, who was a pagan priest and chieftain (goði), made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After making his decision he is said to have thrown his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall.
From there we will drive up the Bárðardalur valley towards the waste highlands where we will have to go Off-Road trough the deep snow to reach the majestic waterfall Aldeyarfoss which is a really unique waterfall. Tumbling through a narrow passage into a wide basin, the concertinaed black basalt columns provide a stark contrast against the thrashing white foam, making it often considered one of Iceland’s photographic gems.
Now we take you even further up river to reach the last but not least of the 3 waterfalls we take you to which is the hidden gem Hrafnabjargafoss. This waterfall is not known by many and very few tourists ever see it, especially during the winter time when it is the nicest. The falls spreads out over a series of cliffs and at one place it falls into a closed rock bowl and then under a stone bridge to continue down the river. Photographers we have taken to Hrafnabjargafoss have been stunned by the falls and gotten some really good shots there.
After testing our skills in the harsh highlands we make a little twist and take you on a Off-Road expedition all the way to the North Atlantic ocean or to the black sand beach at Kaldakinn, where spectacular Himalayan like mountain loom over head. Here you have quite spectacular scenario of mountains, cliffs, the beach and ocean. This place is somtimes used by ice climbers during the winter time.
This tour is every photographers dream.
